America Math Lone Star Edition™(Spanish version available)

America Math Lone Star Edition is the most
comprehensive and up-to-date math warm-up in
Texas!
Third, fourth, and fifth graders are expected to know more
than 200 mathematical concepts and skills by the end of
the year. More than 200! In this age of high-stakes testing,
teachers can’t afford to wait a month before the test to
start reviewing the year’s material—there’s simply too
much.
America Math Lone Star Edition™ starts your review in the
fall, long before the test in the spring. Each page is packed
with a variety of skill, numeracy, and word problems. The
problems are simple at first, but gradually spiral upward in
depth and complexity. After just three weeks, you’ll be
amazed at your students’ confidence and proficiency.
Our warm-up isn’t just a review, though. It’s a preview as
well. Whether it’s geometry, fractions, or probability, your
students will have received a healthy exposure to the
concepts and skills long before your math units in the
spring. This inevitably allows you to go deeper into the
concepts when the time arrives because your students will
have been practicing the fundamentals weeks before!

Q: Is Lone Star correlated to the TEKS?
A: Yes! Lone Star is 100% TEKS-based and reflects the recent changes to the TEKS. Every problem is tagged
with its TEKS objective in the lower right corner.
Q: Why is so much of each warm-up dedicated to word problems?
A: Because the STAAR is 100% word problems. Did you know that the 2006 5th grade math test had over 1,600
words on it? That’s an average of 37 words per problem!
Q: When should my class start Lone Star?
A: If your students’ proficiency is generally low, you may want to wait until October or November. If their
proficiency is on grade level, start immediately.
Q: How many days each week should my students use Lone Star?
A: We suggest three to five times per week.
Q: Should Lone Star be worked sequentially, or do I pick and choose?
A: Lone Star is designed to be worked sequentially, starting with the first and working toward the last,
regardless of what formal unit your students are working on.
Q: Does Lone Star start easy and get harder?
A: The first couple of weeks are a review of the previous grade level. Subsequent pages address skills and
concepts on grade level.
Q: Should Lone Star be graded?
A: That’s up to you. Some of the material addresses skills and concepts that may not have been formally
taught. If you choose to grade it, you might consider not grading the new material sections.
Q: Should Lone Star be sent home for homework?
A: Anecdotal evidence suggests that it should be worked, checked, and reviewed in class for maximum impact.
If you do have to send it home for homework, though, be sure to check it in class the next day.
Q: Should I check Lone Star with my students or by myself?
A: Check Lone Star with your students! This allows you the opportunity to model and discuss the problems.
Q: Can I try Lone Star before I purchase it?
A: Yes, we provide free trials of all of our products. Click here to download your free trial.
Q: Is Lone Star available in Spanish or bilingual versions?
A: Absolutely! Most of our products are available in high-quality Spanish versions.

Q: I’m really short on time and I don’t have time to implement Lone Star during math. What can I do?
A: Modern classroom schedules are often hectic. If you happen to have 20 minutes between lunch and art, by
all means, use that time for Lone Star! We also have a half-page version called Lone Star Express. Click here for
more information.
